Anthropic opens 10,000 Claude seats for scientists

Anthropic announced that it is opening 10,000 Claude subscription seats to scientists around the world through a new team plan offering free and discounted access for one year.

The company said standard seats will be free. Premium seats, which carry five times the usage limits, will cost $15 per month. Anthropic said it intends to expand the program beyond the first 10,000 seats over the coming months.

Eligibility and subscription access

Scientists can register for the Claude team plan through a verification form. Anthropic said applicants must be principal investigators or hold equivalent positions at academic or nonprofit research institutions.

Once verified, an applicant can add researchers from their lab to the plan. The announcement does not state a separate eligibility requirement for those lab members.

The subscriptions extend Anthropic’s existing work for scientific users. The company said it launched Claude Science in June. According to Anthropic, that product integrates tools commonly used by researchers, produces auditable artifacts and offers flexible access to computing resources.

Anthropic also said it has been broadening its AI for Science program, which provides free credits to researchers working on what the company describes as high-impact scientific projects.

Broader research credit program

Anthropic said its AI for Science program has largely supported scientists using Claude for biological sciences to date. The company is now seeking to provide credits to researchers in other scientific fields, including projects requiring substantial computing resources.

Researchers whose labs need more usage than the standard or premium plans provide can apply to the AI for Science program. Anthropic said any researcher is eligible to apply for up to $50,000 in credits for each project.

The company cited work related to the Riemann zeta function and Claude’s protein-design work as examples of the kind of compute-heavy research it wants the expanded program to cover.

Model access for life sciences

Anthropic said researchers working in biology and chemistry will remain limited to Opus-class models for now. The company said Fable models will continue blocking professional biology and drug development queries because of their potential dual-use risks.

Anthropic also said it is working with the US government to establish an access program allowing life sciences professionals to use Mythos-class models for research and development. The company said the program has enrolled its first participants and that it expects to share more information and increase access soon.

Anthropic said the subscriptions, project credits and Claude Science product are intended to increase researchers’ access to and use of Claude.
