Anthropic adds healthcare tools and expands Claude for Life Sciences

Anthropic introduced Claude for Healthcare and expanded Claude for Life Sciences with new connectors, agent skills and support for clinical trial and regulatory work.

Claude for Healthcare is intended for healthcare providers, payers, health technology companies and startups using Anthropic’s HIPAA-ready products. Anthropic also announced integrations through which individuals can choose to connect personal health information to Claude.

Healthcare systems and administrative work

New healthcare connectors give Claude access to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Coverage Database, including Local and National Coverage Determinations; ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes; and the National Provider Identifier Registry.

Anthropic says these connections can support tasks including coverage checks, prior authorization reviews, claims appeals, medical coding, provider verification and credentialing. HIPAA-compliant organizations can use Claude for Enterprise and access existing healthcare-related connectors such as PubMed, which provides access to more than 35 million pieces of biomedical literature.

Anthropic also added agent skills for FHIR development and a sample prior authorization review. The latter can be customized to an organization’s policies and working practices and can cross-reference coverage requirements, clinical guidelines, patient records and appeal documents.

The company says Claude can help review prior authorization requests, assemble information for claims appeals, triage patient messages and support care coordination. Startups can also use the Claude Developer Platform to build healthcare administration products, including tools for clinical documentation, chart review and clinical decisions.

Personal health integrations

US subscribers to Claude Pro and Max can choose to give Claude access to supported lab results and health records. Anthropic announced HealthEx and Function connectors in beta and said Apple Health and Android Health Connect integrations were rolling out in beta through the Claude iOS and Android applications.

When users connect their information, Claude can summarize medical histories, explain test results in plain language, identify patterns across health and fitness measurements, and prepare questions for medical appointments.

Anthropic says access requires an explicit opt-in. Users can select what they share, change permissions or disconnect the integrations. The company says it does not use users’ health data to train models. Claude is designed to acknowledge uncertainty, provide contextual disclaimers and direct users to healthcare professionals for personalized guidance.

Life sciences additions

Anthropic expanded Claude for Life Sciences beyond its initial emphasis on preclinical research and development to include clinical trial operations and regulatory work.

The announced connectors include Medidata, ClinicalTrials.gov, ToolUniverse, bioRxiv and medRxiv, Open Targets, ChEMBL and Owkin’s Pathology Explorer agent. They join existing connections to Benchling, 10x Genomics, PubMed, BioRender, Synapse.org and Wiley Scholar Gateway. Anthropic also made the Benchling connector available through Claude.ai on the web with SSO access.

New agent skills cover scientific problem selection, conversion of instrument data to Allotrope, scVI-tools, Nextflow deployment and sample clinical trial protocol drafting. Anthropic says Claude can draft trial protocols using organizational templates and relevant requirements, monitor enrollment and site performance through Medidata data, identify gaps in regulatory documents, draft responses to agency questions and navigate FDA guidance.
