Anthropic launches free Claude service for US K-12 teachers

Anthropic introduced Claude for Teachers, giving verified K-12 educators in the United States free access to premium Claude capabilities, teaching skills and standards-aligned curriculum resources. Educators who sign up by June 30, 2027, can receive a full year of access.

The service is limited to educators and follows Claude’s policy requiring users to be at least 18 years old. Anthropic also offers a separate service for schools and districts, which it launched on August 28, 2026.

Curriculum and classroom tools

Claude for Teachers connects to Learning Commons, which gives Claude access to academic standards across all 50 states. The connection also covers the smaller learning competencies underlying each standard and the order in which students typically learn them.

Anthropic says Claude can use those resources when drafting scaffolded lesson plans aligned with state standards. Available curricular materials include OpenSciEd and IM v.360 from Illustrative Mathematics.

Educators can also connect Claude with nine K-12 products: ASSISTments, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Coteach, Diffit, Eedi, MagicSchool, Snorkl and TeachFX. Their functions include creating standards-aligned lessons and math problems, adapting instructional materials, producing classroom designs and diagrams, generating diagnostic questions, and reviewing classroom or assignment information.

The service includes teaching skills co-developed with Learning Commons and grounded in learning science. Anthropic says it designed the skills around tasks identified by teachers, evaluated them for pedagogical alignment and classroom use, and refined them using feedback from classroom educators.

Teachers can ask Claude to draft lesson plans and student materials from curricula mapped to their state standards. They can also request differentiated versions of instructional materials for students at different readiness levels.

Claude Code, Cowork and scheduled work

Claude for Teachers includes Claude Code and Cowork. Anthropic says teachers can give Claude folders containing instructional resources and de-identified diagnostics, exit tickets and notes, allowing it to analyze classroom performance and help tailor instruction.

Teachers can also schedule recurring work. Anthropic gives the example of having Claude review de-identified exit tickets each school day and adapt the next day’s lesson plan based on what students mastered.

Anthropic says users control the data they share and that material submitted through Claude for Teachers is not used for model training. Training is disabled for verified teacher accounts.

Privacy terms and teacher training

Anthropic says student information is covered by its K-12 Data Processing Addendum, including FERPA-aligned protections. The company clarified that Claude for Teachers is FERPA-configured to process student records, but identifiable student information may be used only with authorization from a school or district. District and state policies determine whether and how educational data can be used.

Teachers can also access an AI fluency course co-created with Teach For America and a train-the-trainer module co-created with the American Federation of Teachers. Anthropic describes the guidance as model-agnostic, practical and available under a Creative Commons license.

Anthropic is also releasing new connectors, an open-source repository containing the teaching skills and a technical account of their evaluation. The company plans to pilot an evaluation in the Detroit Public Schools Community District focused on educator wellbeing and practice.
